Using Ancestry.com
The largest genealogy database is Ancestry.com. This database has many helpful features, including a discussion forum and an online family tree creator. You can use Ancestry to search for birth, Census, immigration, and other records.
If you don't have a subscription to Ancestry, your local public library may have a subscription, so you can access the database from a library computer. A free trial of Ancestry is also available, just visit http://www.ancestry.com. When you first visit Ancestry, you'll see a search box. To start your search, fill out as much information as you have. If you are unsure if your information is correct, just enter what you know. In the example below, I am unsure of my grandfather's middle name and date of birth, so I am leaving that blank. This video from Ancestry.com shows how to search the collections.
