Charting Family Relationships
What does it mean to say someone is your "first cousin, once removed"? Is there a difference between a second cousin and a first cousin, once removed?
As you dig deeper into your family tree, you may come across these terms. Use the chart below to identify how you are related to another family member. To use the chart, write your name in the SELF area. Find your First Cousin, Once Removed. By looking at the chart, you can see that your first cousin's child would be your first cousin, once removed. Find Second Cousin on the chart. Your second cousin is your great aunt or uncle's grandchild. This chart tells us that the first cousin, once removed is not the same as the second cousin.
